“ Paolo and Maria brought just a few books with them, among them The Year 3000, written ten centuries earlier by a physician with a bizarre imagination who tried to guess what human life would be like a millennium on. ”
from the opening paragraphs of The Year 3000: A Dream, by the Italian neurologist, physiologist, anthropologist, and writer Paolo Mantegazza. Originally published in 1897, the book was first published in English in 2010, translated by David Jacobson.
“Imagination is Everything” by Andrew B. Meyers. Another favorite is “Buyer’s Remorse” in the 2011 Pt. 2 section.
I wish the logo itself illustrated better the “lake of lakes” (rather than lake of pebbles?) concept, but anyway, lovely design work over at Branding 10,000 Lakes by Minneapolis-based Nicole Meyer.
“Photo of George Saunders by George Saunders of George Saunders by George Saunders, etc., etc.”
The linked interview is worth a read, too, if you have any interest in Saunders in particular and writing in general, but the meta party is mostly confined to the photo.
So, um, determinism and the what now?
This is basically the equivalent of Einstein playing with an action figure of himself, isn’t it?
(Even though that marionette’s face looks more like Twain to me.)
